The Book Nook . . .

bringing a glimpse of what you’ll find for adults in

The Media Center

Are you looking for a proven strategy for helping your children become better readers? Well, look no further than your church Media Center. One way of helping develop avid, interested  readers is to model that behavior for your children. Many    families have daily SSR—Sustained Silent Reading—and the summer is often an easier time to begin. While the children are participating in the Kids Reading Club, you can foster their    interest by reading alongside them. With over 300 new books catalogued since January, the Media Center is brimming with appealing titles. Then, set aside a time, perhaps after dinner, when everybody reads. As you read, demonstrate the interactive nature of the reading process by chuckling aloud, wiping a tear, gasping, or commenting on ideas. Share an appropriate, interesting passage or encourage a family member to share. Ask thoughtful questions about the books your child and your spouse are reading. Come in to the Media Center soon and   explore the shelves for some great reads—and instill in your children a love for reading that will likely improve their grades when school starts.
